The TT did not go for it.
Program:
Lion Bud Byrd introduced Betty
Wilburn who is the Executive Director of the NW LA Eye Bank. She was accompanied by Tina Shephard, also
from the Eye Bank.
Ms. Wilburn told the Club that
hospitals are required to ask family members of decedents about donating the
eye tissue. She mentioned that the age
of the donor is becoming less of a factor as it was in years past. The family members are questioned about
lifestyle, etc. to determine whether or not the deceased is a candidate to be a
donor. If they pass that test the
tissue is removed and sent to a lab for testing to ensure there is no
possibility that a disease could be transmitted to the recipient. Transplant usually take place within 5 days. They will generally not transplant tissue if
the time of the donation and the transplant exceed 7 days. If a deceased has been out of the country
they will not be able to donate because of SSARS, etc. She mentioned the Eye Bank handles about 110
tissue donations per year.
