BOARD MEETING NEXT WEDNESDAY, JULY 9^TH, 2003, AT 12:00 NOON

Opening: Presiding: President Lion Ed Ball; Prayer: Lion Bob Allen; Pledge: Lion Bud Byrd, Leading the song was Lion Gabby Garbarino with PDG² Lion Paul Little playing the cymbals and Lion Robbie Raiford tinkling the simulated ivory.

NEXT WEEK’S PROGRAM: Lion Bryan Self will present another really great speaker -- Mr. Al Kessler. Mr. Kessler is retired from the phone company and remains active on current issues, which will benefit the strength of the local economics, and particularly on the I-49 project. This will be another great speaker – please attend the meeting and support our club.

NOTES/Remarks:

• Lion Robbie Raiford was recognized (presentation of certificate) for being on the NSLC’s Board for 2002-2003. Also, she received a verbal appreciation for her playing of the piano.
• Lion Paul Little brought up the fact our attendance is lacking for the weekly meetings. He had contacted numerous MIAs and learned of their reasons for not attending.

WE NEED MEMBER PARTICIPATION IN OUR WEEKLY MEETINGS!!!

• Big Bass Rodeo… Sell tickets and the Rodeo is September 27^th. Lion Gloria Kennedy made available posters and handouts about the Rodeo.
• Prez Ball has accepted the donation of a refrigerator, which will replace the non-working model we have now. A few Lions volunteered to help him get it and clean it up.

Tailtwisting: Lion TT Bill Archambeau got hard-to-work on his duties and Lion Gabby Garbarino was ferrying the pot around the room. Lion Prez Ball started the new Lion’s year on time and did not get fined. The following were sung to for their birthdays falling in the month of July: Lions Craig Kennedy, Hubert Gleason, Ed Stevenson and Patricia Schwartz. Other good information on today’s attendance included the following – LION’S CLUB Anniversaries: Lions Bud Byrd, Gabby Garbarino, and Oscar Smith; WEDDING Anniversaries: Lions Bob Allen (Dorothy) and Paul Little (Martha).

Program: Lion Patricia Schwartz snuck in an editorial which further supported the issue raised by Lion Little – WHERE ARE OUR MEMBERS? She presented Dr. Dennis Wissing, Professor and Head of LSUHSC’s Department of Clinical Sciences. Folks, you missed a lot of great information about – CAFFEINE --presented via PowerPoint and by a very knowledgeable person. Studies have shown:

• We should consume no more than 300 mg of caffeine on a daily basis – there is about 50 mg in a five-ounce cup of coffee
• Better methods of checking for cholesterol are available than the “sticks” you get at the community Health Screenings – consult your doctor for all the numbers which are needed to be known to address a therapy need
• Caffeine elevates: blood pressure, cholesterol levels, cardiac activity (systemic cardiovascular resistance), homocysteine levels and stress
• PMS symptoms worsen
• Retards intrauterine growth
• Associates to pre-term infant deliveries
• Can delay conception
• Newborn babies can suffer from a withdrawal effect [could this be another factor in have anything to do with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDs)]?

Good news about caffeine:

• Helps in pain control
• Causes neonatal apnea – results in a newborn being able to breathe
• Helps some with physical endurance
• Helps the liver function
• No connection noted with cancer

Myths:

• Doesn’t give us energy or a lift
• Does not sharpen our mind

Ticket Drawings: The red ticket winners were: Lions Bryan Self and Oscar Smith. A third ticket was drawn which resulted in Lion Patricia Schwartz winning a carpenter’s level.

BLUE TICKET: Lion Bob Allen did not pick the Queen of Hearts – the pot is getting bigger!

Attendance Prize: Lion 3^rd VP OSCAR SMITH won the attendance prize of $35.00.
