Lion Tom Adgate was in attendance and he paid a $1.00 to not have his
very belated birthday song sung by today’s large crowd. Then onto the
Millionaire questions. Everyone did pretty well today on the questions.
PROGRAM: Lion Stuart Reeks introduced Mr. Danny Fogger, General Manager of the Strand Theatre.
(Danny is retired from the Shreveport Police Department after 25 years.) The
summertime is very busy for the Strand staff. It involves getting ready for
the rest of the year for the various acts which will be performing. The Strand
is on the National Registry and has been since 1977. It is the only regional
arts production which also owns its building. The structure was built in 1925
as a movie house and it was the first building in Shreveport with air conditioning.
It has done all kinds of performances for many years including vaudeville
and later being a cinema. Vision from Mrs. Virginia Shehee, Judd Tooke
and Jim Montgomery saved the theatre from becoming a parking lot - they
got together and started the ball to rolling in making The Strand into today’s
performing art center. ABC donated the building in exchange for an appraisal
for more than $1,000,000. The eventual success was because of untiring efforts
by the three aforementioned. Lots of general deterioration and vandalism occurred
through the many years of its existence. Danny told several humorous things which have occurred on the
many performances. One of the funniest was about having live camels during
the Songs of the Season performances - they are a lot to handle and
a contingency plan is in-place. Last year more than 4,000 people attended
12 shows. For more information about The Strand or to become a member of the
prestigious Friends of the Strand group call 318.226.8555 - the website: www.thestrandtheatre.com.
