"Liberty, Intelligence,
Our Nation’s Safety"
August 29, 2002
Opening: Lion Charles Smith thanked God for His many blessings and asked him to be with those in need, particularly Lion Walter Pipes and his wife, Frances. Lion Kevin Anderson led the First Verse of America with Lion Paul Little playing the cymbals. Lion Gene Bacon led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Visitors: There were no visitors at the meeting.
Remarks: Lion First Vice-President Ed Ball, filling in for “missing” Lion President Max Lipscombe, told the club that Lion President Max sends his regards from Federal Court where he is on jury duty—just another way WE SERVE. Lion Gloria Kennedy reminded everyone about the upcoming Lion Bass Rodeo and brought bass boat raffle tickets for us to sell. She encouraged all members to sell as many tickets as possible. Lion Bryan Self mentioned that Lionism has yet another first—we are the first Service Club ever organized in Mainland China.
Induction Ceremony: Lion PDG Hubert Gleason had the privilege of inducting our newest member, Lion Rubye Davitt, into the North Shreveport Lions Club. Lion Hubert spoke about our unique organization and the importance of taking the pledge seriously and helping to contribute to the club. Lion Rubye was pinned by her husband, Lion Steve Davitt. Another NSLC “husband-wife duo” joins us. Welcome Lion Rubye!
Attendance Awards: Lion Secretary Scott Harkey “belatedly” awarded 2000-2001 100 Percent Attendance Awards to the following members: Lions Bill Archambeau, Gene Bacon, Gabby Garbarino, Hubert Gleason, Scott Harkey, Gloria Kennedy, Craig Kennedy, Robert Schwartz, Bryan Self, and Charles Smith. Great job, 100 percenters!
Tailtwisting: Lion TT Bill Archambeau began his session by fining latecomers Lions Gloria Kennedy, Larry Laborde, and Alan Yokem. Lions Charles Smith and Robbie Raiford dropped coins in the pot for a missing birthday gift—we’ll all try to figure this one out! Lion Gene Bacon was fined because she confused us when she left out “Fellow Lions” in the pledge—even though we’re not all Fellows (as was whispered to your editor by Lion Kevin Anderson, who was then fined for lack of enthusiasm in leading us in the First Verse.) Lion Gloria Kennedy was fined for talking while Lion Ed was trying to get the ceremony started. Lion Patricia Schwartz, last week’s Yellow Rag Editor, was fined for saying—in Lion TT’s words—he raised a fortune last week. Seems that he will be raising the fines from a dime to a quarter!! Lion TT proceeded to read us the things we should have learned from Noah’s Ark. With Labor Day very near, our illustrious Tailtwister ended the session ended with questions related to work and unions. Lions Larry Laborde, Libby Gleason, Bryan Self, Alan Yokem, Lisa Nash, Paul Little, Bob Allen, Robbie Raiford, Charles Smith, and Russ Peterson showed their knowledge—or, in most cases, lack of knowledge—on the subject. It was suggested that we go back to TV trivia!
Program: Lion Russ Peterson introduced Mr. Andy Taft, Director of the Downtown Development Authority for the City of Shreveport. Mr. Taft presented “Downtown 2010.” He began by stating that a few short years ago we would not have imagined a new convention center, a downtown municipal building, and the downtown business growth. The Downtown Development Authority is not waiting to see what happens in the world, but has decided to “pour on the coals and drive the vision to the next level.” A growth plan for Downtown Shreveport has been developed which includes: core values, clean and safe environment, strengthening the core of downtown with the courthouse as the center, the edges (areas around the core), residential, zoning, and funding. A great deal of time and effort is presently being spent on the West Edge which has the highest density of vacant historical buildings. An arts district is being created which will include antique shops and restaurants as well as art galleries. He detailed plans for developing parks in downtown since there presently is now “greenspace.” Convention planners have indicated a need for such space. What can we expect in the foreseeable future: Downtown Convention Center/Hotel, Red River Entertainment District, Red River Visitor Center, Riverview, and a parking garage. For more information, log on the www.downtownshreveport.com. Great program!
Ticket Drawings: $5.00 red ticket winners were Speaker Andy Taft and Robbie Raiford. There were 21 members in attendance. Lion Gary Kennedy’s name was drawn for the attendance prize, but he was not present. The Blue Ticket was drawn by Lion Gabby Garbarino who did not pick the winner. The pot is getting bigger!
