September 5, 2002

Opening:  Lion Chaplain Jim Peck thanked God for His many blessings and asked him to be with those in need.  Lion Bud Byrd led the First Verse of America with Lion Paul Little playing the cymbals and Lion Robbie Raiford  on the keyboard .  Lion Paul Little led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Visitors:  Mr. Steve Umling was the guest of Lion Bryan Self.

Remarks:  Lion Past President Mike Middleton presented President Max Lipscombe (who was happy to be back after Jury Duty) with  the “This Year Everything Is My Fault” pin for him to wear to the USA-Canada Forum which will be held in Fort Worth on September 27-28.  Lion Bryan Self distributed Chicken Charbroil tickets.  The tickets were printed free of charge by the Louisiana Technical College/Shreveport-Bossier Campus.  Lion Second Vice-President Stuart Reeks read an article about the future of Lionism with the main topic being membership which is the key to the future.  Lion President Max gave Lion Stu an A in reading! Lion Paul Little announced that Louisiana Industries donated blocks for use in our charbroil pits.  Lion Hubert Gleason distributed brochures and order forms for our annual nut sale.  He stated that the cutoff date for sales is November 10, and he encouraged us to sell them by the case.  The Lions Bass Rodeo is September 29.

Tailtwisting:  Lion TT Bill Archambeau fined latecomers Lions Larry Laborde, Bill Spickerman, and Lisa Nash.  Lion Charles Smith was fined for making an obscene suggestion that the TT cannot change the fines from a dime to a quarter!  Seems there is a question about the by-laws!  We surely wouldn’t want our illustrious TT to have to go to Lions incarceration now would we?? More words of wisdom were shared with us by the TT prior to honoring our birthday Lions.  September Lions include Lions Libby Gleason, Bud Byrd, and Bryan Self—Happy Birthday!  Lion Russ Peterson was fined for waiting until summer is over to wear shorts.  He responded that he was only trying to please “you people” by wearing long pants; however, he was unable to find any long pants that morning!  Lion Paul Little was fined for missing the first cue for the cymbals in the first verse.  Lion TT then began our Southern Word exam—which most of us failed.  Being tested were Lions Jim Peck, Larry Laborde, Bud Byrd, Bryan Self, Scott Harkey, Lisa Nash, Bill Spickerman, Robert and Patricia Schwartz.

Program:  Lion Kevin Anderson introduced Mr. Mike Sledge, a CPA/Financial Advisor.  He stated that the program would be primarily question/answer format.  Mr. Sledge began by stating that individuals who began investments in 2000 felt that they “missed the party” since the late ’90’s saw the market at an all time high.  Those who did not come into the market until 2000 are seeing a continuing down trend.  He responded to various questions throughout the program.  He stated that confidence must be increased and a beginning of that would be to put the people in jail who “robbed with the pen.”  He stated that in the investment market there is a saying, “bulls and bears live off the pigs.”  He said that investors need to think like successful business people.  His advice when choosing an investment advisor is to ask them the question, “Are you an asset gatherer (bring money into the firm) or and asset manager (look at the particulars of investments)?  He also stated that when making investments we need to determine what kind of investor we are and what our time limits are.  In response to the disjoint between the economy and the stock market, he state that ultimately they will be tied to each other.

Ticket Drawings:  $5.00 red ticket winners were Lions Paul Little and Hubert Gleason.  There were 26 members—up five from last week—and one guest in attendance.  Lion Larry Kennnedy’s name was drawn for the attendance prize, but he was not present.  The Blue Ticket was drawn by Lion Larry Laborde who did not pick the winner.  The pot is getting bigger!
