PROGRAM: Lion Oscar Smith introduced himself. Oscar spoke
of himself – he will soon be 60 years old and he was born in
Greenville, MS. He was the second of fifteen children. He was born on a plantation which is now a
suburb of Greenville. His dad was a share cropper. Oscar started
school in kindergarten – kids got spanked for talking on the bus. His mom
encouraged lots of reading, education and just being responsible for yourself
and your actions – Discipline was enforced.
His parents were married for 49 years prior to his dad passing
away. He graduated from high school in
1964 and then entered into the U. S. Air Force for four years. He then attended
Mississippi State
University – they play
Tulane here next week. Oscar played football at MSU. After he decided teaching/coaching wasn’t for
him, he joined the U.S. Navy as an officer.
He served on three different ships during his four years. Oscar has
three children – two girls and one boy.
His son, Oscar III, is in the
Navy and currently an E-7 about to become an officer. Rachelle has a successful career in pharmaceutical sales – she has
been one of our top speakers at NSLC. Yolanda, the eldest daughter manages a
Wendy’s Restaurant near Biloxi
