Program: Lion Past President Robert Schwartz introduced our speaker, our very own Lion PDG Jimmie Giles, our District 8-L
Diabetes Awareness Chairperson. He
began his presentation by stating that everyday people are cured of cancer, but
for the Diabetic person, there is no cure.
There are 200 million people in the world who have Diabetes and that
number increases by 6 percent every year.
Seventeen million people in the United States have Diabetes. It is estimated that five million people
have it and do not even know it. He
stated that there are two types of Diabetes.
Type I Diabetes or Juvenile Diabetes causes an individual to immediately
become Insulin dependent. Individuals
with Type I must have a tailor-made diet and an exercise regimen for the rest
of their life. Type II Diabetes usually
is diagnosed in individuals over 40 years old, particularly those overweight
and inactive. Type II Diabetics have
two problems—Hypoglycemia and Hyperglycemia.
Symptoms include constant urination, abnormal thirst or hunger, rapid
loss or gain of weight, exhaustion, drowsiness, and itching, tingling, and
numbing of the feet. The gloomy
statistics of Diabetes include: third
leading cause of death in the United States; third leading cause of blindness
in individuals 45-65 years old; Diabetics are 17 times more prone to Kidney
disease; and 5 times more prone to Gangrene.
Diabetes can cause many problems in the heart, serious circulation
problems which many times cause serious foot problems and nerve damage. It can cause the Kidneys to shut down, and
then the Diabetic must go on Dialysis for the rest of their life. There are three types of Dialysis used
depending on the individual. Lion Jimmie ended by telling the
personal story of the serious complications his deceased wife, Betty, suffered as a result of
Diabetes. What a great program! NSLC is
proud to have you represent our club and our district as Diabetes Awareness
Chair. Kudos to Lion Jimmie!
UPCOMING PROGRAMS: Lion Robert Schwartz will introduce Shreveport
Interim Police Chief Mike Campbell as our speaker for September 25.
Ticket Drawings: Regretfully,
your “substitute editor” was too busy seeing if she won to write down the other
$5 winners and to hear whose name was drawn for the attendance prize, or the
blue ticket! The pot is getting bigger
since the Queen is still there!
Let’s remember to keep Lion Gabby and Lion Gloria in our
thoughts and prayers.
