                                                                                                September 19, 2002

Opening:  At the request of Lion President Max Lipscomb, Lion Chaplain Jim Peck said the prayer with special remembrance for Lions Walter Pipes and Charlyne Langton (recently in the hospital).  Lion Stu Reeks led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Lion Steve Davitt led the group in the First Verse with Lion Paul Little playing the cymbals and Lion Robbie Raiford playing the piano.

Guests:   We had only one guest – the speaker.  Twenty-four members were in attendance.

Remarks:  Lion President Max gave some information from last week’s Zone Meeting: (1) 8-L Fall Conference will be held October 11th and 12th at the Isle of Capri Hotel – Call Max (425-4444) for more information; (2) Lion VDG Bonnie Pharr reported over 2,500 pairs of glasses collected by South Shreveport; (3) South Shreveport will be having a chicken charbroil October 18 & 19; and (4) West Shreveport will be cooking and selling fish this weekend at Greenwood’s Pioneer Days…. Lion Bryan Self – Chicken Charbroil Chairperson, asked members to sell those tickets and thanked Lion Bill Alexander for his pledge for firewood and Lion Harold Wright was thanked for his contribution of $100.  See Lion Bryan Self for tickets – oh yeah, on the multi-sales-tickets, be sure to include the information on the right side on the left side also – such as # of dinners and who it is.  Lions Hubert and Libby Gleason attended the Congressional Medal of Honor banquet.  Hubert brought us a remark from the meeting: “It will not stay the “land of the free”, unless it is the “home of the brave.”

Tailtwisting:  Tailtwister Lion Bill Archambeau burnt just about everyone including trying to get today’s Rag Editor/Greeter – Lion Mike Middleton – everyone there before the bell was greeted!.  The TT returned to media and entertainment trivia plus got some late fines.  Well, we like to try to get as many club members’ names in the Rag as possible who are in attendance, so here is a listing of everyone not mentioned elsewhere in The Rag today:  Lions Bob Allen, Charlie Smith, Rubye Davitt, Gabby Garbarino, Paul Little, Kevin Anderson, Scott Harkey, Robert Schwartz,  and Jerry Paige.

Program:  Lion Bill Alexander presented our speaker, candidate for re-election to Caddo Parish School Board, Mike Powell.  Mike, devoted husband and “Dad” for his seven children, gave us an update and overview of the seven years of his incumbency on the school board.  Subjects included: sex education issues, invitation to a former CPSB school board Superintendent to leave (not Dr. Schiller, who received positive comments from Mike); pay issues; improvement of quality of education from standpoints of reading, education itself, brick and mortar building projects.  The CPSB – staff and board -- aims to continue improving of the school system in infrastructure and employees and not to accept status quo that “we are doing somewhat better.”  Mike answered several questions from the audience and reminded us that changes in the Caddo Parish Schools is measured over several years – not always an immediate indicator of success as we look for in private business.

Drawings:  Lions Ed Stevenson & Gene Bacon won $5.00 each for red tickets.  Lion Patricia Schwartz got the chance at the card draw – NOT, more $$ next week.  Lion Ray Cook not present for the attendance prize.
