"Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation’s Safety"
October 3, 2002
Opening: Lion Charles Smith thanked God for His many blessings and asked him to be with those in need. Lion Bryan Self led the First Verse of America with Lion Paul Little playing the cymbals and Lion Robbie Raiford on the keyboard. Lion Patricia Schwartz led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Visitors: For the third week in a row, the only guest was our speaker, Mr. Bob Griffin.
Remarks: Lion President Max Lipscomb reminded the club that the Fall Conference will be held at the Isle of Capri Hotel next weekend, October 11-12 with cabinet meetings held from l:00-4:00 p.m. on October 12. Lion Bryan Self, Chicken Charbroil Chair, gave an update on the Charbroil. He proudly announced that Lion Paul Little, in keeping with tradition, had already sold (meaning $$ collected) 489 chicken dinners. Great job, Lion Paul! Lion President Max also reminded board members of the monthly board meeting scheduled for next Wednesday, October 9, 2002. Lion Hubert Gleason, nut sales chair, had samples on the table and reminded us that sales should be turned in to him by November 10, 2002.
Tailtwisting: Lion TT Bill Archambeau fined latecomers Lions Larry Laborde, Oscar Smith, Libby Gleason, and Jerry Paige. He announced that Lion Russ Peterson, not in attendance at the meeting, owes $4 for winning the pot last week. Lion Hubert stated that he should owe $4.40 next week (a little interest added)! Lion Charles Smith, who earlier had asked if anyone wanted coffee on the morning we package chickens since “it is a lot of trouble carrying the coffee pot over there if not many people are going to drink it”, was fined for arguing over our coffee for the charbroil. Lion TT recognized our “October Birthday Boys” Lions Bill Spickerman and Lion First V-P Ed Ball. Lions Harold Wright, Gene Bacon, Larry Laborde and Ed Stevenson were questioned about what the month of October meant for them—everyone stated “the month I joined Lions Club”—with all being correct except Lion Ed. We won’t print the correct answer, but if his wife found out, she might not like the fact that he didn’t say, “Our anniversary.” Lion Patricia Schwartz was fined for telling Lion TT that she and Lion Robert’s feelings were hurt that he did not remember that this month is their anniversary also—then the TT proceeded to blame it on someone else, and was reminded that it was his responsibility to keep up with such things! Millionaire questioning was then continued with Lion Oscar Smith really shining with his knowledge of sports. When asked how many players were on a soccer team, he first assertively asked, “one side or both?” and then answered the question correctly. Correct and incorrect responses were about equal today.
Program: Lion Past President Mike Middleton introduced our speaker by using a little different approach—question and answer—since our speaker is not stranger to any of us—Mr. Bob Griffin, longtime television sports personality. He began his presentation by stating that he is now, as most of us know, in semi-retirement. He said that his twin daughters are always telling their mother and him that they work 24/7. He now responds that he works 2/5—works two days and takes a five-day leave. His message is a positive one about the Shreveport-Bossier Community. He stated “I don’t blow smoke, I really like Shreveport-Bossier.” He has lived in the community for 42 years and came here to stay about two years. He said he has stayed here for two reasons: first, he loves it, and second, nobody else wanted him! Far too many people who are residents here say, “I like Shreveport-Bossier, but…” Some of the positives about the community which he mentioned included:
Last, but certainly not least, our people make this community great!
Ticket Drawings: $5.00 red ticket winners were Lion Gabby Garbarino. Regretfully, your “substitute editor” was too busy seeing if she won to write down the other $5 winner and to hear whose name was drawn for the attendance prize. The Blue Ticket was drawn by Lion Bill Archambeau who did not pick the winner. The pot is getting bigger!
At the close of the meeting, Lion Robbie Raiford told me, your part-time editor, that Lion Charlyne Langton was discharged from the hospital yesterday. Let’s remember to keep Lion Charlyne and her family in our thoughts and prayers.
MAJOR PROJECTS: Louisiana Lions Childrens’ Camp, LSU Eye Foundation, Northwest Louisiana Eye Bank, Louisiana Association for the Blind, Northwood
High School Leo Club.
Scholarships for Northwood and Green Oaks High Schools
