Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation’s Safety”

November 13, 2003

Opening:  Lion Jim Peck thanked God for His many blessings and asked him to be with those in need.  Lion Bob Allen led the Pledge of Allegiance and Lion Cindy Fortson led the First Verse.

NOTES/Remarks:

Tailtwisting:  Lion TT Bill Archambeau fined several latecomers (sorry—your “last minute” editor did not write down names.)  Lion TT—it was LSUS coaches who were attending our meeting—not Centenary!!  Millionaire questioning was continued with Lion Bryan Self as potboy.  The pot surely earned some money since most of us couldn’t answer the “difficult” questions.  Lion Bryan felt the need to help some of us with our answers—only to give the wrong answer!!

Program:  Lion Jerry Paige filled in for Lion 1st VP Stu Reeks and introduced our speaker, LSUS Athletic Director Doug Robinson who was accompanied by the baseball coach, and girls’ and boys’ basketball coaches.  They reported a great baseball season last year and expectations of a repeat this year.  Basketball, which is just beginning—is off to a great start with the first home game this week.  Athletic Director Robinson stated that LSUS gets no money from LSU-Baton Rouge.  All funds for LSUS athletics is raised from student fees and local fund raising.  The school is limited on scholarships; therefore, they recruit students who are well rounded—academically as well as athletically.  Since the basketball teams are just getting started, a majority of the players are freshmen.  The coaches are highly motivated and expect great things athletically at LSUS.  All Lions were invited to come out to the games.  Those interested should contact Doug Robinson at LSUS.

Ticket Drawings: $5.00 red ticket winners were Lions Ed Ball and Patricia Schwartz.

BLUE TICKET: The Blue Ticket was drawn by Lion Cindy Fortson who did not pick the winner.  The pot is getting bigger!

Attendance Prize: The attendance prize would have been won by Lion Stu Reeks.

MAJOR PROJECTS: Louisiana Lions Childrens’ Camp, LSU Lions’ Eye Foundation, Northwest Louisiana Eye Bank, Louisiana Association for the Blind, Northwood High School Leo Club, Scholarships for Northwood and Green Oaks High Schools, and NSLC Teachers of the Year.

FUNDRAISERS:  Chicken Charbroil – October; Candy & Nuts – November;

Irish Auction – March; Rose Sale – April
