Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation’s Safety”

November 21, 2002

Opening:  President Max Lipscomb called the meeting to order and Lion Hubert Gleason thanked GOD for HIS many blessings and to remember Lions Joe Rosett and Charlie Smith (Charlie is currently hospitalized).  Lion Robert Schwartz led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Lion Bryan Self led us in the first verse with Lion Paul Little sounding the cymbals and Lion Robbie Raiford playing the piano.

Visitors:  There were no visitors at today’s meeting.  There were 25 members present.

Remarks: Lion Max returned from this week’s Zone Meeting with “The Book” – a book offering an estimated $3,500 in savings through local restaurants and other events- (remember the “Let’s Eat” books?)   cost is $35.00 and the club can make a good profit if we help sell a bunch of them…

Lion Mike Middleton mentioned a recent referral our club did to the Eye Foundation – within 2 days the patient was having a lot of relief of pain from a medication he was given – we can’t swear that it contributed to his aid, but is the time coincidental or what?!?!?.. A follow-up after the meeting via phone reveals still having less pain and he has been released from his next pending appointment with the Foundation due to the pain relief – it has given someone new hope – not for vision restoration – but for coping with the entire situation.  This is what Lionism is about folks.

Lion Scott Harkey with the assistance of Lion Oscar Smith, displayed several styles of shirts and other paraphernalia with the logo of the greatest service organization in the world: LIONS.  Check with Scott if you are interested in ordering.  The shirts are pretty much shown on the Lions website: https://supplies.lionsclubs.org/cgi-bin/LionsSupplies.storefront/

            An additional memorial contribution in honor of Lion Charlyne Langton was received from Roberts, Cherry and Co. – thank you!

Holiday schedule:

Thursday, December 19th – Annual Christmas Party

Thursday, December 26th – No meeting

Thursday, January 2nd – Yes, meetings will resume on 1/2/03

Tailtwisting:  Lion TT Bill Archambeau was quick and furious getting a lot of laughter and fines; including the always-easy-fines.  Somewhere in the midst, Yellow Rag Editor Lion Mike Middleton was fined for some of last week’s Rag’s being released into the mail with only the address side – no Rag inside – sorry about that folks.  Then Mike was fined for not playing the official game of putting his Lions badges in the right receptacle after meetings – I’ll do better! Some “ragging” occurred between Lions Bryan Self and Craig Kennedy:  Bottom line --- Lion Craig is looking for a “good barber.” Then, the TT got back to the week’s lack-of-trivia knowledge questions.

Program:  Lion Scott Harkey introduced today’s speaker, Andy Shaw.  Andy is associated with Sword Sports, a local business located on North Market which is about sword fencing.  Andy did a great presentation about the history of fencing. It was extensive, fast paced, entertaining and loaded with lots of good information – far from being boring.  He even made a connection of fencing from New York to local resident and realtor Roger DeKay.  The DeKay family name is associated with a long-known fencing enthusiast from New York City.  There is no way in print that I can give justice to what all Andy told us today – if I was to put it in perspective, it would definitely be labeled (considering KSLA’s Sports and Stuff) this was Fencing and Stuff.  Thanks Andy and Scott for a great presentation.

Ticket Drawings:  $5.00 red ticket winners: Lion Robbie Raiford – a double winner setting in Lion Charlie Smith’s chair. Blue ticket winner: Lion Mike Middleton – Mike drew a Joker and got $5.00.

Attendance Prize:  Lion Dan Delaney would have won – maybe next time.

MAJOR PROJECTS: Louisiana Lions Childrens’ Camp, LSU Eye Foundation, Northwest Louisiana Eye Bank, Louisiana Association for the Blind, Northwood High School Leo Club, Scholarships for Northwood and Green Oaks High Schools

FUNDRAISERS:  Chicken Charbroil – October; Candy & Nuts – November;

Irish Auction – March; Rose Sale – May
