Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation’s Safety”

December 5, 2002

Opening:  President Ed Ball called the meeting to order. Prior to Lion Charlie Smith being asked to give a prayer in which we remembered our recently deceased member and club president – Lion Max Lipscomb; Charlie asked God to also remember Doyline Lions Club member – Lion David Bazer who is undergoing surgery today for cancer.  Lion Gabby Garbarino led us in the first verse with Lion Jerry Paige sounding the cymbals and Lion Robbie Raiford playing the piano.

Visitors:  There was one visitor: Vice-District Governor Bonnie Pharr.  27 members were present.

Remarks: Lion Craig Kennedy distributed “The Book” which we sell for $35.00 each.  “The Book” – is a coupon book offering an estimated $3,500 in savings through local restaurants and other events- (remember the “Let’s Eat” books?)   Cost is $35.00 and the club can make a good profit if we help sell a bunch of them – 100 books equals $1,400 profit for the club.  Hopefully, we should sell at least one per member because everyone eats or visits many of the places in the book – you will recover your cost of the book through the many savings – they would also make a great stocking stuffer.

Christmas Party/Meeting will be on December 19th – let Lion Mike Middleton know if you and a spouse/whoever will attend with you.  The cost will be $10.00 per person.  You can call Mike and leave a message anytime of the day at 318.681.0630.

BOARD MEETING:  WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 18TH

(not 12/11 as Ed will be out-of-town)

Holiday schedule:

Thursday, December 19th – Annual Christmas Party

Thursday, December 26th – No meeting

Thursday, January 2nd – Yes, meetings will resume on 1/2/03

Tailtwisting:  Lion TT Bill Archambeau first fined the latecomers.  Then several members received the birthday song for December: Lions Bob Allen, Jim Peck, Stuart Reeks, Paul Little.   We also honored Tailtwister Bill Archambeau for his (not yet celebrated) November birthday…. The fun time of the day continued with the TT’s trivia questions.  Lion Jerry Paige was congratulated for improvement at his Ingersoll School for both academia and cosmetics (Shreve Corps by Shreveport Green).

Program:  Lion Ed Ball suspended today’s regular program schedule for a special event.  We are all concerned about recent losses of very active members this Lion’s year:  Lions Max Lipscomb, Charlyne Langton and Walter Pipes.  Ed asked several long-time members to speak to the club to get everyone re-invigorated about our many Lions projects.  PDG Bud Byrd spoke about:  The Camp, the Eye Bank and the Foundation – these projects exist and thrive because of Lionism.

Lion Scott Harkey then spoke about the unfinished work that Lion Max saw as being Max’s burning desire for the many projects we support.  Lion Mike Middleton asked the club to make this a most prosperous Lion’s year in the name of Lion Max.   Lion Paul Little then spoke about the way the NSLC was and should still be a leader of Lionism in the community.  We need all members to continue to grow in the many facets of Lionism leadership – we should be all working to grow our membership – there are more Max’s out there and we need to find them.  Everyone should call five members each Thursday morning to ensure a higher attendance.  Lion Bill Archambeau first met Lion Max several years ago at a business group meeting – he reiterated the great work of Max and that we should help new members to GROW.

Ticket Drawings:  $5.00 red ticket winners: Lions Gloria Kennedy and Charlie Smith.  The blue ticket drawn was Lion Gloria – she missed – the prize next week will be over $350.

Attendance Prize:  Lion Hubert Gleason would have won the attendance prize.

MAJOR PROJECTS: Louisiana Lions Childrens’ Camp, LSU Eye Foundation, Northwest Louisiana Eye Bank, Louisiana Association for the Blind, Northwood High School Leo Club, Scholarships for Northwood and Green Oaks High Schools
