Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation’s Safety”

December 19, 2002

Opening:  Lion Ed Ball opened the meeting with a big greeting to everyone.  Lion Charles Smith thanked God for His many blessings and to bless the food.  Lion Robert Schwartz led the Pledge of Allegiance. Lion Gabby Garbarino led everyone in the First Verse with Lion Paul Little playing the cymbals.

Visitors:  Our traditional Christmas meeting had lots of visitors today:  Lions Gloria and Craig Kennedy introduced the daughter of our entertainment, Glennette Mazier (U.S. Army) as well as Vice-District Governor Bonnie Pharr; Lion Ed Stevenson – wife of 58 years, Faye; Lions Hubert and Libby Gleason – friend, Liz Beck; Lion Gene Bacon – daughter-in-law, Mary Bacon; Lion Bob Allen – wife, Dorothy; TT Bill Archambeau – wife, Dot; Lion Scott Harkey – wife, Terry; Lion Paul Little – wife, Martha as well as wife and son of the late Lion Joe Rosett – Claudine and Ronnie; Lion Gabby Garbarino – wife, Gaye; Lion Charles Smith - wife, Francine; Lion Alan Yokem – wife, Kelly; Lion Pete Copes – wife, Shirley; Lion Mike Middleton introduced Garry Lispcomb, one of the late Lion President Max Lipscomb’s sons.  Also visiting and assisting us today was Diane who is employed by Jack’s Barbecue.  It was a really great crowd for a special Christmas luncheon – everyone is invited back anytime!!!

Remarks: A special round of applause was given to Lions Scott Harkey and Gloria Kennedy for the day’s Christmas decorations – this included them mopping the floor and Gloria washing all the tablecloths last night – a big THANK YOU to Scott and Gloria.  The NSLC Board met on Wednesday and here are a few notes:  The North Highland Womens Club has given NSLC $150 to forward to the Lions Childrens Camp; the Irish Auction will be held on March 7th and it will probably be held at the University Club; IPP Mike Middleton will be calling on the club’s past presidents after the first of the year to nominate a name to complete this year’s position of Third Vice-President.  Other noteworthy club news:  Lion Hubert Gleason has more candy and nuts for sale and next year we can only order by the full cases.  Call Hubert at 869-3809 for that last minute Christmas candy gift…. Lion Craig Kennedy reminded everyone about “The Book” which we sell for $35.00 each.  “The Book” – is a coupon book offering an estimated $3,500 in savings through local restaurants and other events- (remember the “Let’s Eat” books?)   Cost is $35.00 and the club can make a good profit if we help sell a bunch of them – 100 books equals $1,400 profit for the club.  Hopefully, we should sell at least one per member because everyone eats or visits many of the places in the book – you will recover your cost of the book through the many savings – they would also make a great stocking stuffer.

Thursday, December 26th – No meeting

Thursday, January 2nd – Yes, meetings will resume on 1/2/03

Tailtwisting:  Lion TT Bill Archambeau was very forgiving today by fining no one in the name of good Christmas fun, however, the pot was passed by Lion Paul Little (serving as Pot person) to allow members to donate to the Tailtwister fund.  The TT then did his traditional Cajun Twelve Days of Christmas; a Cajun Christmas Story; and what Christmas Really Means.  Much participation was solicited and given to the Tailtwister by club members and guests – it was a traditionally great Christmas Special – thanks illustrious Tailtwister Bill.

Program:  Lion Gloria Kennedy presented the program today.  Mrs. Helen Mazier is a special angel.  Helen and her husband have raised eleven children – a few of their own and many foster and adopted children in need of a special family.  Helen entertained us with special Christmas carols and her wonderful voice helped put us closer to the reason-for-the-season – CHRIST’s birth… Thank you, Helen.

Ticket Drawings:  We had lots of winners today.  Winning a Jack’s Barbecue smoked turkey was Lion Bryan Self. $5.00 red ticket winners were: Lions Bob Allen and Libby Gleason.

Winning poinsettia plants were: Lions Bob Allen (won 2); Gloria Kenney (gave hers to Mrs. Mazier); Bryan Self; Steve Davitt, Craig Kenney, Pete Copes, Paul Little, Ed Ball; and guest, Liz Beck.  $5.00 red ticket winners: Lions Kevin Anderson and Gabby Garbarino.  Lion Gene Bacon’s blue ticket was drawn and she missed the Queen of Hearts – she got the Queen of diamonds.  The prize next week is approaching $400.

BLUE TICKET:  Lion Bob Allen (a quad-facto winner for the day) – however, he missed the Queen – next meeting the prize will be over $400.  Be there or be square.
